What is alternator?

An alternator is a rotating electrical machine that converts mechanical energy into alternating-current (AC) electricity by electromagnetic induction. In a diesel generator set it is the half of the unit that actually makes electricity: the diesel engine provides the rotation, and the alternator, coupled to the engine shaft, turns that rotation into the AC power the plant consumes. The engine is the prime mover; the alternator is the generator proper.

The alternator's design determines the quality of the power produced. Its rotational speed and pole count fix the output frequency (50 Hz in India), and its excitation and voltage regulation determine how steady the voltage is under changing load. A good alternator with proper automatic voltage regulation holds output steady as machines switch on and off; a poor or undersized one lets voltage sag and surge, which is itself a source of voltage fluctuations that can damage sensitive plant electronics — the very problem a backup supply is meant to prevent.

For plant operation the practical points are matching and maintenance. The alternator must be matched to the engine and to the plant's load profile, including the high starting currents of large motors such as shredder and extruder drives, which can momentarily draw several times their running current. Bearings, windings and the voltage regulator need periodic checks; insulation degradation and bearing wear are common failure points that take the whole DG set offline.

For an Indian entrepreneur the guidance is to look past the engine rating when buying a DG set and confirm the alternator's rating, voltage-regulation class and ability to handle motor-starting loads, since power quality during a switchover depends on it. Specify a reputable alternator, keep the voltage regulator and bearings on the maintenance schedule, and ensure the set as a whole is sized for both steady and starting loads.
