Long-distance transport describes the breakdown point where hauling digestate beyond roughly 50–100 km becomes uneconomic because freight cost overtakes the underlying nutrient value of the material. Raw liquid digestate at 90–95% moisture contains only ₹150–250 per tonne of effective NPK value at Indian fertilizer-equivalent prices, while road transport in a 25 KL tanker costs ₹8–14 per kilometre, or roughly ₹350–500 per tonne for a 100 km haul. The freight bill therefore exceeds the fertilizer worth before the truck has even left the district.

The economic break-even shifts dramatically with dewatering. Solid digestate at 25–30% dry matter triples nutrient density per tonne and pushes the viable transport radius to 150–200 km. Composted or pelletised Fermented Organic Manure at 85–90% dry matter, sold under FCO 1985 at ₹6–10 per kg, can travel 500–800 km because the freight share of landed cost stays below 15%. SATAT CBG plants therefore face a binary choice — invest ₹1.5–3 crore in screw-press separation and a pellet line to access the national market, or lock in localised offtake within a 25 km farmer catchment.

Several second-order factors compress the viable radius further. Liquid digestate must be applied within 7–14 days to avoid nitrogen volatilisation, ruling out long road journeys with weather delays. Indian state border check-posts can add 4–8 hours of standing time, during which uncovered tankers lose 5–10% of their ammoniacal nitrogen. Empty backhauls are common because no return cargo matches digestate's bulk and odour, doubling effective freight rates.
